Using citizen science to modernize the environmental movement

The world’s largest coordinated citizen science campaign, Earth Challenge 2020, aims to engage millions of people to collect and share 1 billion data points on air and water quality, biodiversity, pollution and health. Speaking at Science Unlimited 2019, Anne Bowser described how the project brings together existing communities, builds capacity for new activities and advances our knowledge of environmental and human health.

Anne is helping to launch Earth Challenge 2020, which recognizes the 50th anniversary of Earth Day as a critical milestone in planetary health. Her research seeks to understand and mobilize public participation in science, technology, and policy, with a focus on citizen science technologies and the role of data standards and interoperability. Anne is Director of Innovation at The Wilson Center’s Science and Technology Innovation Program.
